At-Large $6000 Need-Based Scholarship Recipient
K’la is a 2016 graduate of Kestrel Heights High School of Durham, North Carolina. She plans to attend Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina and major in Biology.
She was involved with the following activities while at Kestrel High School: Yearbook Club (2012 – 2016), Treasurer (2013 – 2014, Drama Club (2013 – 2014, Student Council (2013 – 2016), President ( 2015 – 2016), Track and Field ( 2013 -2015), A/B Honor Roll (2013 – 2015), President’s Volunteer Service Award 2013,
2014) and President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award (2015). K’la has an excellent attendance and School Citizenship record. She was present every day except two during the 2015-2016 school year. Her GPA was almost 3.0 and ACT test score was impressionable.
K’la’s Latin Teacher describes her as the most easygoing, yet determined and tenacious student he has ever taught. “She will not be the first student to finish her work, but she will finish it and it will be correct”, he states. “K’la works especially well in small groups and her collaborations are always fruitful.” Her ability,
motivation and self-discipline were rated good and excellent. Comments on her character and academic promise elicited the following, “She has always been a pleasant student; however, the last two years have shown marked improvement academically.”
K”la believes pursuing a college education is well worth it, costing an average of $30,000 yearly, though one could leave owing a lot of money. She wishes to become a pediatrician, so a college degree is a necessity. She notes that she can get a job with a high school diploma; however, it would not yield a comfortable living
wage. “Nothing good comes easy” is an accurate description of the hard word and cost a student must invest in a college education”, states K’la.
K’la remains dedicated to the work needed and the cost she will incur to attend college and medical school in order to reach her career goal. Her career choice will afford her the income to pay back the cost. In life, one pays for choices one makes; in this case it’s the cost of higher education.
