$2000 Academic Scholarship Recipient
Colby Cornell Boone, a 2013 graduate of Lakewood High School, Salemburg, North Carolina. He is currently a rising sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University in Greensboro, North Carolina with a major in Entrepreneurship. His GPA was 2.9018 at the end of his high school days, but he elevated his academic game at A & T. He had a 3.0 GPA at the end of first semester.
Colby is pursuing education beyond high school because he knows that a high school education is insufficient, and that a college education will lead to a successful life. He believes that his
background will not have a direct effect on his future; that he just needs to rely on his college education to provide business contacts, relationships and partnerships for networking and guidance. His parents are not college graduates; yet, they fully understand the value and importance of an education. He desperately wants to take the next steps to make them proud. He wants to become a successful business owner, so proper training is being received to assist him toward his goal. Education is indeed the great equalizer.
Colby’s Lakewood High Counselor noted that he is a young man with high ambitions and attainable goals. He has written poetry for years and readily shares it at every opportunity. At A&T State University he was involved in the following: Public Relations Officer (2014 – 15) Student Activities Board, Public Relations Assistant for Project March, Community Services Involvement (Campus and Community), Windsor Community Center Volunteer and Couture Word (Spoken Word and Ebony Arts).
A teacher at Lakewood who has known him for three years and has watched him mature was adamant about these statements: “ Colby Boone has a strong personality ; he is charismatic yet playful. He is honest and straightforward even when he is in the wrong. Colby has the aptitude and potential to succeed in an academic setting. When he is focused, he will not allow himself to be distracted; he is on a mission. His particular interests are directed to poetry and music; he devotes a lot of time and effort in developing both. The focus, attention and dedication exhibited in this avenue need only to be aimed at the academic angle and success is attainable. Colby will have discovered the combination needed to propel him to new heights – success.”
