$2000 Academic Scholarship Recipient

Christopher Joseph Lowery, Jr. is the winner of the SHSAA, Inc. Academic Scholarship in the amount of $2,000. He plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in Business. He is a 2020 graduate of Charles J. Colgan Senior High School.  There, he was Club Ice Hockey, Lacrosse Captain, JV Football, Future Business Leaders of America, Letter Recipient and Principal’s List.

His Counselor describes him as a confident young man who has a good sense of who he is, highly motivated and knows what he wants to do in life. He has challenged himself academically as is evidenced by his transcript.

Chris addressed the risks of obtaining a college degree: falling in debt due to increasing tuition cost, dropping out or failing out; all extreme enough to make one forgo the opportunity especially the low income student,, the student of color and those who attended under resourced schools. But concluded that indeed a college degree makes one more marketable, offers a larger network, exposure to a diverse population, internships and increased chances for financial stability.
