Local $6,000 Need-Based Scholarship Recipient
DeAsia is a 2014 graduate of Clinton High School. She plans to attend NC A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. This need-based scholarship will assist her with her career goal of becoming an accountant.
At Clinton High School, DeAsia was a North Carolina Academic Scholar, member of the CTE Honors Society, Beta Club, Latin Club, Student Government Association and Latin Honors Society. She served as president of the Ebony Club, captain of the Varsity Softball Team and cocaptain of the Varsity Basketball Team. She was the Wendy’s Heisman Winner for Clinton High School. She accomplished all this while maintaining a GPA of 4.2946; the highest in the senior class was 4.74 and an SAT score of 1410.
When asked, “Why are you pursuing higher education”?, DeAsia wrote, “It is the right thing to do; it will make my family proud, but because I want it for myself. However, in today’s economy, higher education is a pre-requisite to becoming gainfully employed. College graduates get better jobs, earn more money, are more financially stable and are happier employees than non-graduates. I will have the opportunity to meet new people from various backgrounds and gain a better appreciation of differences in the human race. I will learn more about myself as I mature and become more independent. I do not plan to be another bad
statistic; I plan to be a better citizen of the world and make a difference.”
DeAsia managed to maintain an “A” average while playing basketball and softball and working part time. She is a great role model for her two younger siblings and she is active in her church serving on the youth choir and the praise dance team. Her counselor and selected teachers all described DeAsia as: a leader among her peers, one who surrounded herself with those seeking excellence in the classroom and in extracurricular activities, one of the smartest students in Math (AP Calculus), a great manager of time and a dedicated, gracious and determined student destined for greatness.
