At-Large $6,000 Scholarship Recipient
Damion is a 2018 graduate of South View High School in Hope Mills, North Carolina. He is the grandson of Association members Helen McNair Faison and Willie Lincoln Faison of Clinton, North Carolina. He will enroll at UNC – Pembroke, Pembroke, North Carolina in the fall. He will major in Health Science.
Damion was on the A/B Honor Roll, a Special Olympics Volunteer and an Elementary Peer Helper. He earned all A’s during his last semester of high school. His sport of choice was baseball. He was on JV Baseball Team 2016 – 2017, MVP Player of Year – 2017 and Varsity Baseball Team.
Damion responds strongly when asked “Is pursuing a higher education really worth it?” He states,” that a degree is more than a piece of paper. A degree unlocks new opportunities –that of meeting new people, expanding one’s knowledge and grasping success. With a degree, one can make an immediate impact in the community or even in the world.” Damion plans to use his degree to help people live a healthier lifestyle including showing others how to create a healthy diet and exercise routine. Damion plans to be the role model for his family and his peers. He is excited about the possibility of being a catalyst that creates a healthier world.
His Honors English teacher, whom he visited daily, cited that” he is a unique student who has grown tremendously in two years. He excels in class and finds time to relate to his fellow students.” She further states,” that he is not the stereotypical male student portrayed in in the media. He is respectful and respected; yet, playful, spending most of his down time at home instead of riding the roads or hanging out. He is the kid we wish our kids to be.
