College Tours
Each year , the SHSAA sponsors a day trip to visit colleges and universities. During these visits, students have the opportunity to tour college campuses, attend admissions presentations, and have lunch on a campus. The college tours give students an opportunity to learn about academic programs, campus life, and admission requirements.
Who goes?
The college tour is program is for middle school students.
Why are college tours important and why middle school?
Reports have shown that tour college campuses helped middle school students:
- get excited about pursuing education beyond high school
- identify their strengths and interests, and degree programs that suit their career interests
- learn which type of college will best fit their needs
- learn about college costs – and how to pay for college
Taking middle-grades students on college visits helps students make the connection between the careers they aspire towards and the role of a post secondary degree. The middle school years are critical in setting forth a vision for higher education and more concretely, developing the roadmap to get there. The cultivation of a college-going culture, at school, at home, and in the larger community can have a tremendous impact on a young person’s aspirations and overall belief that college is in their future. College-oriented conversations in middle school helps students be prepared to make better decisions in high school.
How are the college tours funded?
Students pay about 15% of the cost and the balance of the cost is largely subsidized by individual donors who support our mission. We fundraise to cover the expenses for the trip, including travel, food, and any tour/entrance fees.
