$2000 Academic Scholarship Recipient
Jasmine Alexis Sampson, winner of the $2000 Academic Scholarship. Jasmine is a 2017 graduate of Clinton High School in Clinton, North Carolina. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, North Carolina before continuing to pursue a degree in Computer Science.
Jasmine was also enrolled in classes at Sampson Community College while a student at Clinton High School. She has earned more than 13 Community College hours which may be applied toward college credit. Jasmine’s activities at Clinton High School include: CHS Marching Band – Section Leader for two years, CHS Beta Club, CHS Student Government, History Club and Career and Technical Education Honor Society. Her Citizenship and Attendance records are both excellent. Jasmine is a North Carolina Academic Scholar. She has a GPA of 4.164 out of a possible 5.2.
Jasmine writes that she wants to use her degree in Computer Science from UNC-W to secure employment at IBM, Amazon or maybe even the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation. She has considered the cost of a college education and concludes that it is indeed worth the cost because a college degree better prepares you for your career and adult life and offers the benenfit of income stability. She had an assignment in her Civics and Economics Class which allowed her to do some research on the website Everfi on this very topic. This research revealed that the higher your education, the higher your income. Another benefit was the opportunity for better investments for your future. She firmly believes that a degree is well worth the cost. One can definitely have a better life career wise and much better chance to become more financially stable than one who did not finish school or may have earned only a high school diploma.
Jasmine’s counselor wrote that she has known her for more than four years and has witnessed the academic challenges she voluntarily accepted – Honors, Advanced Placement and college level courses. She demonstrated that she is more than capable of achieving success; she has mastered the art of balancing her demanding schedule and fulfilling volunteer work. This art should serve her well in college and in life. Jasmine remained active in extracurricular activities and maintained top academic scores. She is a model student and leader displaying a quiet, intelligent respectful demeanor. She comes with high recommendations from her counselor who relates that, in her belief, Jasmine will do great whatever her chosen field of endeavor.
Jasmine’s History teacher shares comments on her character, academic promise, comparison with other college preparatory students taught and functionality in an academic setting. He writes that she is one of the top students in the American History II Honors class exemplifying integrity and hard work. She takes her education seriously and will definitely take full advantage of the opportunities afforded by this scholarship. Jasmine earned a rating of outstanding when compared to other students taught by her History teacher. Jasmine has worked for three years with her history teacher, who is also Student Government Association advisor, as both a student and a club volunteer. In SGA as a Student Government Ambassador, Jasmine dependably, willingly and voluntarily worked side by side with the History teacher on all projects. She was one of the most dependable assistants with Homecoming efforts – powder puff football games and talent
shows. Jasmine is destined to be successful in college and she possesses the self-discipline and personal drive to excel in life.
